Barcelona remains unbeaten despite phantom goal at Valencia

The gol fantasma strikes again.

On Sunday, in a second-versus-first battle at Mestalla that didn’t involve a club from Spain’s capital and featured a phantom goal, Valencia CF and Barcelona played out a 1-1 draw. The result allowed the Blaugrana to remain unbeaten in La Liga this season and preserved the four-point gap between the two clubs at the summit of the standings.

Jordi Alba scored against his former club, producing an 82nd-minute equaliser, but the game’s talking point occurred in the first half, when Lionel Messi fired a shot between Neto‘s hands that crossed the goal line. Somehow, the assistant referee failed to notice, and it was Rodrigo who opened the scoring in the 60th minute. The incident took place 11 days after the Real Federacion Espanola de Futbol announced that video assistant referees will be implemented in La Liga next season.

Barcelona’s supporters were left feeling aggrieved, but Valencia, whose form is the talk of Spain, deserved a point.
