With one match to spare, Paris Saint-Germain broke the record for most goals in a single Champions League group stage during Wednesday’s 7-1 thrashing of Celtic.
PSG’s 24 tallies at this point of the competition surpassed Borussia Dortmund‘s previous benchmark of 21.
Neymar and Edinson Cavani each scored twice, and solo efforts from Kylian Mbappe, Marco Verratti, and Dani Alves added to an emphatic victory.
The result wasn’t inevitable from the start. Celtic actually took the lead after just 56 seconds through Moussa Dembele, whose shot off a corner kick beat scrambling shot-stopper Alphonse Areola.
But the shock wore off quickly. Neymar ripped through Celtic’s left side before Cavani and Mbappe struck the back of the net. It was over by the end of the first half.
No one in Europe’s top-five leagues is remotely close to PSG’s 69 goals across all competitions.
