With his effort against Villarreal on Sunday, Barcelona star Lionel Messi closed in on shattering yet another goal-scoring record by tying legendary Bayern Munich striker Gerd Muller’s mark of 525 strikes for one club in the top European leagues.

Messi scored the second in a 2-0 win at the Estadio de la Ceramica, extending the gap atop La Liga to five points above Valencia. But, as seemingly is the case with each of his net-bulging efforts, Messi’s latest goal bares deeper meaning as he draws level with one of the finest goal-scorers in world football.

The diminutive Argentine previously surpassed Portuguese striker Eusebio’s 473 goals about a year ago, and now draws level with Muller, who played for Bayern from 1964 to 1979.
