Barcelona star Lionel Messi posted a photo Tuesday on his Instagram featuring the Argentine international, his eldest son Thiago, and dozens of kits from the world’s most celebrated footballers.
The tradition of shirt swapping, a phenomenon first witnessed following France‘s 3-2 win over England in 1931 – Les Bleus’ maiden result over its neighbours to the north – has become a footballing staple, and naturally, Messi’s threads have been in high demand.
In addition to Messi’s Barca and Argentina kits are those of several of his countrymen he’s faced like Angel Di Maria, Pablo Aimar, and Sergio Aguero, and one, West Ham‘s Manuel Lanzini, who has not yet played his fellow Argentine but swapped shirts in 2016.
Messi has said in the past that he does not seek out other players for their kits, and has only once asked for one at the end of a match, saying, “I am not one to ask to swap shirts. I asked, once … I asked Zidane.”
