The Messi Trophy? La Liga president open to naming MVP award after star

Lionel Messi has already immortalized himself in football’s history books, but the Barcelona star’s legacy could become even greater.

La Liga’s Player of the Season award could be named after the Argentine at some point in the future, according to league president Javier Tebas.

“I believe that Messi will be the greatest player of all time, even if he isn’t already,” Tebas said, as quoted by the Independent’s Ed Malyon.

“Messi has been playing since he was a kid and always at the absolute top, top level and he never wavers. It would be a good idea to create a trophy in the future for the best player of that season that has Messi’s name on it.”

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is La Liga’s all-time record goalscorer with 390 strikes in 427 games in the competition. He’s also won nine league titles.

Past players have been honored in such a way, although not always officially. Spanish publication Marca, for example, awards the Pichichi Trophy to each season’s top goalscorer in La Liga and the Zamora Trophy to the best goalkeeper.
