Madrid mayor expects La Liga season to finish behind closed doors

Fans won’t be allowed to attend matches if it’s deemed safe for La Liga to return in the coming months, according to Madrid mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida.

Martinez-Almeida said sporting venues across Spain will remain closed to the public deep into the summer and possibly beyond due to the impact the coronavirus pandemic has had on the country.

“In the spring and summer there won’t be any events with crowds in Spain, and possibly not in the fall either,” Martinez-Almeida said, according to Tales Azzoni of The Associated Press. “Because obviously the situation will not be fully under control. We will have to change our habits and behaviors even after being allowed to go back on to the streets.”

He added: “Soccer matches without fans in the summer is a possibility, as long as health and safety conditions are observed.”

The La Liga season was initially expected to return after two weeks when it was stopped on March 12.
