Atletico’s Suarez tests positive for COVID-19, set to miss Barca reunion

Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez has tested positive for COVID-19 while away on international duty, the Uruguay football federation said in a statement on Monday, as translated by Reuters.

Coronavirus protocols suggest Suarez would have to miss Saturday’s La Liga clash against former side Barcelona in the Spanish capital.

Uruguay’s statement also confirmed goalkeeper Richard Munoz and a staff member tested positive ahead of Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Brazil in Montevideo.

All other members of Oscar Tabarez’s squad returned negative results, according to Monday’s announcement.

Suarez, 33, played 70 minutes in Uruguay’s meeting with Colombia on Friday in Barranquilla, scoring his record-extending 63rd goal for La Celeste from the penalty spot as part of a comprehensive 3-0 victory.

Atletico teammates Jose Maria Gimenez and Lucas Torreira are also currently on international duty with Uruguay. Gimenez missed the start of Atletico’s domestic campaign after the central defender contracted the virus in September.
