Messi reaffirms desire to play with boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys

Lionel Messi has joined Andres Iniesta in ruling out the possibility of playing for another European club, as the Barcelona star reaffirmed his desire to play in Argentina before he retires.

“I’m increasingly sure that in Europe, Barcelona will be my only club,” Messi told Argentina’s El Trece, as translated by Reuters.

“I always said I wanted to play in Argentine football one day, I don’t know if it will happen but I have it in my mind.

“It would be at Newell’s, nowhere else. I would like to do that for at least six months, but you never know what will happen.”

Before developing into one of the greatest footballers of all time, Messi began to make a name for himself with his boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys in his hometown of Rosario.

Newell’s Old Boys’ vice president said he was “convinced” that Messi will eventually return to the club where he launched his legendary career.

Meanwhile, Messi’s former teammate Iniesta recently lived up to his promise of avoiding a scenario where he would have to play against Barcelona by joining Japanese side Vissel Kobe.
