Messi cracks 50-goal mark for 9th time in last 10 calendar years

He waited until the last possible opportunity this time, but Lionel Messi has once again scored 50 goals – for club and country combined – in a calendar year.

The Argentine found the net in Barcelona‘s 4-1 win over Alaves on Saturday, bringing his tally in 2019 to the half-century mark. It was good timing, too, as Messi won’t get back on the pitch until next month when the Blaugrana return to action for the latest installment of the Catalan derby against Espanyol.

Over the past decade, Messi failed to notch 50 goals in a calendar year just once when he only managed a modest 45 markers in 2013.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner will almost certainly never hit the heights of his otherworldly haul in 2012 again, but there’s no reason why he can’t continue to flirt with the 50-goal plateau in 2020 and beyond.
