Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is scheduled for right knee surgery Tuesday after powering through the season with a tendon issue.
Though the club didn’t provide a timetable for his return, ESPN’s Sam Marsden reports that Ter Stegen will miss around two months.
If confirmed, the 28-year-old won’t be available for the start of the La Liga season, which begins Sept. 12.
The club said the procedure is a “proactive measure” to prepare Ter Stegen for the 2020-21 campaign.
The 28-year-old started 46 games across all competitions during the 2019-20 campaign, including last week’s 8-2 collapse against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. He underwent conservative treatment on his knee in January and missed the Spanish Super Cup later that month.
Backup Neto would fill in if Ter Stegen misses significant time. The Brazilian has gained experience as a No. 1 ‘keeper, logging 67 starts in two seasons with Valencia before joining Barcelona in 2019.
