Lazio director angered by Silva’s U-turn: I have no respect ‘for the man’

Lazio sporting director Igli Tare issued a terse statement Tuesday after David Silva backed out of joining the Biancocelesti.

The Spanish playmaker reportedly agreed to join Lazio on a three-year deal following the expiration of his Manchester City contract. However, he was surprisingly unveiled as a Real Sociedad player Monday.

“I learn about David Silva’s transfer to Real Sociedad. I have great respect for the player, but not for the man,” Tare said in a short statement on Lazio’s website, as translated by BBC Sport.

The 34-year-old inked a contract through 2022 with Real Sociedad. He will help fill the void left by Martin Odegaard‘s controversial return to Real Madrid following a superb season-long loan in San Sebastian.

Silva returns to his homeland after 436 appearances over a decade-long spell with Manchester City, during which he collected four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and five League Cups. He made his name at Valencia before he moved to English football.

A statue of Silva will be unveiled outside City’s Etihad Stadium in 2021.
